The four-day week
Several companies that trialled a four-day working week reported that productivity remained stable or even improved, while employee stress fell sharply. Critics argue that the results are skewed, since the firms that volunteered were already well managed and unusually motivated. Whether the model would survive in a struggling business, where deadlines are tight and margins thin, remains an open question. What the trials do show, however, is that the link between hours worked and output is far weaker than most managers assume.
